26th January - Magnetic Island

Hudson:

Happy Australia day! Just a quick blog before we join in the festivities in the bar which will include games such as thong throwing (they are flip flops to you and I!).

This morning we took a tour of the wildlife sanctuary which is based here at our hostel. Yvonne our guide was very keen on everyone getting to hold the various animals - a little overly keen for our liking!! I made further strides on addressing my snake phobia and held a 2 metre python!

Here are some of the best pics:

Note that its mouth is taped up! This is a baby 'salty' or esturine to give the formal name. They are the ones you really need to worry about!

Me and Michelle with Barney the koala - their claws are pretty sharp - think I managed to mask my grimmace a bit better than Michelle!!

On my side again (stupid computer) with the python - managed to hold for about 10 seconds before I got a bit scared as I could feel it's tail going round my neck!!

We had orginally planned to stay on the island until the weekend but given the poor weather we're moving on tomorrow towards Cairns (and a nice motel - this is a lovely setting but with the 'camp kitchen' and rain pouring down we feel like a participant on 'I'm a Celebrity' - I hope the Aussie day games don't include any bush tucker trials!).

Talking of bush tucker we decided not to go for the bush lunch as it was all gourmet food rather than the weird stuff you get on I'm a Celeb.  We did have a little taste of bush tucker though this morning.  There are lots of large green tree ants and we were told that if you licked their bums it tasted a bit citrusy so obviously we obliged!! Not sure I'll be adding them to my Coronas anytime soon!!
