Tuesday 1st December - Heli Hike

Handley:
Today we've booked to go on a heli hike on the Franz Joseph glacier. We get a helicopter ride onto the glacier and then do a walk on the ice through the ice caves.

We got thoroughly wrapped up, thermal trousers, tops, hats and coats the full works and we sat in the office waiting to go and then we got the news.... it's cancelled!!

We are both gutted!  Last night we were woken up by torrential rain and we thought that the trip might be cancelled, but when we woke up there was no rain and it looked quite clear.

Then slowly the cloud moved in - this is the glacier.... what do you mean you can't see it... it's to the right of that hill!

We asked about additional trips that day, but the afternoon session was fully booked, but to be honest I think it would have been cancelled anyway.

There was an option to book on another trip in the morning, but have a long drive to Nelson tomorrow and we want an early start, so I'm afraid we've had to bin the glacier trip!!!!

To help with the disappointment Michelle suggested a pub crawl.  We had a pint in the pub and the crawl was over so as consellation we decided to walk up to the base of the galcier inthe hope that we would be below the cloud and we could get some pics at least!!

Woohoo -

We didn't get to walk on the ice, but it was still pretty impressive being so close to it.

There were loads of Kea hoping around the bottom of the glacier as well which was a bonus.  They are pretty big parrots and quite mischievious and we caught one trying to rip into a backpack!
The cloud soon closed in again and the heavens opened!!  Torrential rain and we got soaked to the bone on the walk back.

We headed back to the room to try and dry all our clothes!  Feeling a bit miserable and down we thought we would treat ourselves to a meal out with the money saved from the glacier trip.... mmmm lanb shanks and pizza much better than the cheapo super noodles we had got in for dinner!

Lets hope Nelson is a bit dryer!
