Tuesday 15th December - Whakatane and the reason we are glad we work!

Handley:

Moved onto Whakatane today and stopped off at the Tarawere falls along the way.  The falls come from an underground river that suddenly spurt out of the side of a cliff - pretty cool!

We then  headed onto Whakatane where we plan to visit a very active volcano tomorrow and swim with dolphins the day after that.

The kind of highlight today was being grateful for being in our 30's and having spent several years saving up for this trip to allow us to travel and not work along the way.

The hostel is full of students who are all fruit picking to fund their travels.  They are being paid about 4.60 an hour or sometimes they are paid on the weight of fruit picked and they are working 8 hour days and coming home looking like they have murdered someone their fingers are so stained from the fruit.  They are so tired they aren't even able to change the tv channel - I kid you not this german girl actually gave the remote to me to help her!

How they actually get to see anything other than fruit and the hostel I don't know - hence us feeling a little smug at being a bit older and saying "no, no we aren't fruit pickin we worked har and saved up!"

Only problem is that all this hardwork seems to be creating a slighly depressive stmosphere at the hostel so we dealt with it in the only way we know how - we went to the pub.
