Friday 18th December - Whitianga - home of the fantasy hostel!

Hudson:

Up to glorious sunshine and a sausage sandwich brekkie (my god more treats we are so living the dream ha ha!). The hostel provided free use of sea kayaks so we decided to give it a whirl (hope you're all feeling the love I had for On the Beach - Carlsberg don't do hostels but if they did they'd probably...you get the idea).

To say my sea kayaking career got off to an inauspicious start would be a bit of an under statement. As were attempting to get on board both our kayaks were caught in the swell of the tide and were unceremoniously flipped and dumped on to our legs! Fortunately no harm done aside from a few bruises. Those who've ever gone away with me before will know I'm always covered in bruises anyway so no change there.

Things improved and we had a lot of fun. It was pretty hard work though and our arms and shoulders are now paying the price.

Headed out in the afternoon to see a bit more of the stunning costal scenery:

We then went to the famous Hot Water Beach. There are hot springs under the beach so you can dig a hole which gets filled with hot spring water. We'd been all geared up to try it out but when we got to the part where spring is located it was a bit crowded. A sandy hot bath surrounded by 100's of others on an already scorching day actually held little appeal! So we moved away from the crowds as the rest of the beach was gorgeous and peaceful.  We had a great few hours sunbathing and playing in the sea.

Finished off a great day chatting over more beers with Catherine - happy days!
