Hudson:
Left Christchurch this morning, not before taking a snap of the nice church / catherdral.
Picked up the car, which we have named Suzie and on the road we went. Both very excited about having our own wheels, we tuned the radio into 92.9 Canterbury's finest solid gold fm cue chants of "Road Trip" and "I feel like Thelma and Louise" (lets hope the ending is better :)
There wasn't a massive amount of interest on the 364km drive to Dunedin, the exception being the Mauraki Boulders. These are bizarre almost perfect spherical boulders on the beach. Couldn't resist a few pics, there was a scary moment when I almost got stranded on top of one without realising the tide was coming in, dam the sea!
Anyway after a leisurely drive we arrived in Dunedin at 4.30pm. After San Fran I never thought anywhere would come close to being as hilly, but I was wrong, some of the hills were a 1st gear job.
Finally managed to park up (there were traumas parking and the clutch is just about in tact, but all is ok). Checked into Hogwartz Hostel, after the Base Backpacker this was more like it, our fantasy hostel, it's lovely. It's an old Bishop's House and whereas Base was very functional and catering for a mass market this feels like a proper home with character, complete with a couple of Jack Russels to fuss! We ate in (salad - our bodies were craving veg!) and it really brought back memories of uni what with the whole washing up / kitchen etiquette!
I have to confess we were very naughty and stole someones milk for our coffee - just a tiny amount honest and can I just say I was totally egged on by the little one!
Handley:
Can I just say that most of these 'kids' haven't even been to uni yet, so I was helping them learn a very important life lesson - shared kitchens = stolen food and drink!
Hudson:
Dunedin seems lovely. It's known as the southern Edinburgh. Whereas Christchurch was little England this is definitely little Scotland, there's a Robbie Burns statue in the centre and the architecture has a definiate Scottish feel.
Apparently this is the one part of NZ which has it's own accent and residents have a definite Scottish twang!
Generally seems to have a really nice feel about the place with some lovely buildings, almost a shame we're only here a couple of nights.
