Today we booked a boat trip over to the Ang Thong National Marine Park. It's essentially a collection of islands quite close to Koh Samui. It really is a beautiful place with all the islands so close together.
The trip was pretty good fun and we managed to take in some sea kayaking as part of it. This involved jumping in a kayak from the boat and paddling around a few of the islands. We also got to paddle under some overhanging cliffs and through a few tunnels in the cliffs that had been carved out by the sea. The tunnels were a little scary as you had to lay fully back on the kayak just to squeeze through. We had a waterproof bag so we took the camera, but I'm afraid every time I took it out of the bag I didn't feel that secure on the water so I'm not sure these pictures are really the best!!
We eventually paddled to a small island and jumped out and did a short walk up to the blue lagoon, we aren't sure if this is where they filmed the beach, but it is definitely the place where the author got their inspiration for the book.
As we walked up the steep steps to the up-most view point I thought I recognised the guy in front of me, when we got to the top it turned out that I was right and it was Elliot Johnston on his honeymoon!! Small world or what, meeting people from work this far away is a little surreal!
We jumped back on our tour boat for lunch before heading to another little island they called the 'Sleeping Cow' island. No one really seemed to know why as none of these islands have every had cattle on them and the shape of the land didn't look like a sleeping cow either!
This was our chance to snorkel, do some walks or jump back in the kayak for some more exploring. Michelle went snorkeling whilst I sheltered in the shade of a palm tree. It was at this point in the day that I started to feel the pain of my burnt hands and feet. I think the worst of the damage happened in the mornings kayak session and I felt like I just needed to stay out of the sun.
Michelle said the snorkeling was a bit poor as the visibility was really bad. She saw one fish and hit her toes on some coral and then decided it would be best to give in.
The walks on the island were quite long and as it was really hot we decided to take the opportunity to just sit on the beach and take in the sights.
